SEE JOY IN ACTION

Joy Butler 365 Self Portrait Exhibition

In 2009, I started a ‘365 Days of the Year Self Portrait Project’- which was lots of fun.

I began by taking a photo of myself everyday for one WHOLE year – no stopping and no, it wasn’t an iphone selfie either!

The purpose of this project I had set upon myself was to express my thoughts. Expand my emotions through different media. It was a hard journey, believe it or not, but I did stick with it and have learnt so much from the experience. Every photograph told an individual story for everyday. As everyday brings new beginnings and challenges, so did my self portrait project.

In 2011,  I exhibited this project in the Fraser Coast Regional Gallery for 2 months. The opening evening for this showcase was beyond any of my wildest dreams as many people came to see my line of work. It was by far, a very self-rewarding evening as a photographer and one that has long stayed with me and the public,  as I still have strangers coming to me to tell me how much they loved my exhibition.

In 2012, I visited beautiful Hong Kong. I was honoured to be invited to hold a ‘Natural light photography’ workshop. It was so much fun – and cold! I took my two little girls with me and they had a wonderful time as they got to be models for the day.  Watching them have so much fun as they lapped up all of the attention.

It goes without saying that I am a ‘people-person’. And with that love of people that lies within, I also feel very passionate about charity work. It gives me great pleasure to donate  gift certificates to charities for fund raising, so that they can be put to good use to improve situations and life for others in need. If you think I could help your charity, please feel free to contact me and as I would be happy to help as much as I can.

In 2020, I found Alive Magazine, and join force with four other wonderful women to create a monthly free lifestyle magazine, to tell local stories and spread positive energy to the community. You can check it out here.
